Final reflection on tutoring

Monday, June 18th, 2007

Hi, I wanted to share what I observed as growth with my student at Cox Elementary.  It was reading fluency.  I’m glad I chosed to pair read with her.  The book that we read on Pilgrims was somewhat challenging for her because of the use of  old english speaking style that was used to demonstrate the dialect.  I would discuss these words and tell her of the word that we use today that has the same meaning, such as “perchance”.  She found this use of dialect very amusing in the text and we would speack to each other using some of the words that the pilgrims used.  After, going through the first reading with some identified weakness to work on, I found that if I read a major portion of the text for her the second time it would help her hearing the way of pronounce some of this strange dialect. I noticed that this worked because when she read it aloud to me the final time she had no problem. She read it with excitement and fluency.

Tutor session #4

This was myfinal session with my student at Cox Elementary. I did a final comprehension review on the book “A day in the Life as a Pilgrim Girl”. Using the student’s journal I wrote a question for her in red ink and she responded in blue ink (she liked this).  I used several response to reading strategies for the student to record in her journal as a way to evaluate her understanding of the book that we read.  We also finished the webquest on Historical Figures. She picked Sojourna Truth to read about. However, I noticed she was getting rather bored with the reading. It may have been somewhat to informative for her liking, so I let her look at the picturebook site on Abe Lincoln (also in the webquest me and two other designed for S.S.). I noticed she loved this link because it provided student sample ilustrations and a time line on Abe’s life. My overall point was to have my student see how technology can also be used to research and a webquest is an overall learning tool designed for variety of subjects and topics. Finally, I assigned her a final product task to do after browsing the webquest on the three Historical Leaders it included. I providedmy student a Citizenship Award that she could award to any person in history or life that demonstrates leadership and great citizenship characterics. I provided her with construction paper and stickers. She made a beautiful award. I summed this overall activity up with her writing a 4-5 sentence paragraph telling why she chose this person. We edited the writing for capitals, spelling, and punctuation.

Tutor session # 3

My student and I did a lot of activities today. We finished reading the book ” A Day in the Life of a Pilgrim girl”. We had a post discussion and I gave her two prompts to respond too in her writing journal. I also had my student do a role play activity. I gave her cute stationery and wrote as she was the pilgrim girl writing to her family back in England of her daily life in America. We addressed the letter, she put it in the envelope and stappled it in her journal. I found that it was so cute that my little student was using the dialect speech in her letter she was writing such as the word ( perchance). She really did assume the role as the pilgrim girl in the story. I took in a nice map for her to view and we traced the voyage from England across the N. Atlantic to the New England colonies. I thought it was very important that she had some sense of the geographical distance involved in there voyage. Finally, I thought it would be nice to let her do some reading from a web quest that three of us students designed ( Historical leadership and Citizenship). She picked Sojourna Truth and I have comprehension, vocabulary, and word search that will follow the reading. I want to follow up on this with her on Wednesday.

Tutor Session #2

Hi, I’m so glad that I got to work with my same student again. For some reason one of the aids for the after-school program gets irritated letting us tutor the kids, but I think I was diplomatic enough in explaining to her the purpose and the point that I’m driving an hour to get there so she can not dismiss me. Anyways, my student was very glad to see me. We went over the words she could not pronounce from the AR book( exquisite, exceptional, outrageous) etc, and this is when I asked her if she would enjoy reading about a girls life as a pilgrim. After introducing the text, we read a few pages and than I showed her on the globe where England is located and how the pilgrims crossed the North Atlantic and arrived in the New England territory. She really enjoyed the story and the S.S. theme. We are going to continue this our next session. Sorry, gotta go

Tutor Session #1

Monday, June 4th, 2007

Hi, I’m glad to report that my first tutor session at David Cox Elementary went really well. My student is actually a very bright young girl that I would say is accelerated in her grade level.  She begged me to tutor her though. I think she just is one of those students that thrives on learning. The first session I did a preinterview with her. We positioned our chairs so we were facing opposite directions but our left and right ear were next to each other. First we named five interesting facts about each other and stated them back. Next, we listened to five more things about each other and stated these back. Finally, in the pre interview we challenged each other to recite at least 8 of the 10 facts back to each other.  She really enjoyed this. I let her pick at an AR book (because she wanted too) and we discussed the author and Illustrator. I did write down 6 words that she could not pronounce. I think I learned here that the book may have been a little too challenging for her because I notice she started to lose interest. The next visit I’m going to go over the misspelled words with her and I’m going to integrate a S.S. theme with her. We are going to read about Pilgrims.
